United States President Barack Obama said the appointment of Haider al-Abadi as Prime Minister of Iraq is a "promising step".
He acknowledged that Iraq had passed "difficult days", and urged its political leaders to work together. Earlier Monday, Iraqi President Haider al-Abadi asked to form a new government as Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's office said the appointment was a violation of the constitution.

During the last four nights, air crews of the United States and Britain have conducted 14 humanitarian missions, launching air more than 300 packages of food, water and medical aid, Washington has announced.
