Beatings. Rapes. Verbal abuse. We’ve all heard the horror stories of inmates viciously picking on one another inside state prison walls, but when evidence of such a brutal beating surfaces on Facebook that's when people like heartbroken mother Demetria Harris wants answers, and she wants them now...
Shocked when she saw the photo her son, Cortez Berry, kneeing on the floor with one eye swollen shut and a noose around his neck … Terrified mom Demetria first thought: “Oh my God, what happened?” before she quickly got in contact with the prison in hopes of getting her son to safety. “Where were the guards?” She questioned. “No one deserves this.”
Shortly after, officers began investigating and found the attacks appeared gang related, with the caption on Facebook reading: “When you disrespect the Nation, it brings you pain and suffering.” Experts say the message is a gang reference to gang G.D. Nation – short for ‘gangsta disciples’.
Cortez was abused at Burruss Correctional Training Center in Forsyth, but has been transferred to Smith State Prison in Glennville, GA since. Currently The Department of Corrections is stressing that there’s an on-going investigation into the incident and that the entire facility is on lock-down until more conclusions can be made.
Although, state officials are putting their best effort forward in finding out “how” this happened – we can't help but question why this isn’t the first time? Could this incident simply be on “high alert” because the evidence of such violence was leaked on social media?
