Germany obliges banks to provide services to refugees

The government cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany has signed a bill this Wednesday, which would make it easier hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers coming to this country to open bank accounts.

Based on new legislation, everyone will have the right to use basic banking services, including the homeless and people who are under the protection of the Geneva Convention on Refugees.

This means that immigrants come in Germany may open bank accounts in any such institution, thus enabling cash deposit and withdrawal of "cash", to carry out bank transfers, direct debits and payment by debit / credit.

Germany expects about 800 thousand to one million refugees this year, most of which leave from the war zones in the Middle East and North Africa, although it will not allow all those asylum.

Giving refugees access to the banking system, the Germans seem to take the first step of their integration into society.

"Those who have no bank account, do not have good prospects in the labor market. Even the search for a house for shelter is also a problem for many people without bank accounts, "said Minister of Justice, Heiko Maas.

In Germany, the number of people without bank accounts is higher figures 6-digit, according përllogarive European Commission, and this is expected to increase further due to the influx of refugees from Syria.

So far, only a few first tier banks, with public control, have accepted refugees to their clients. Often they are left as they are knocking on the doors of several banks, because they do not have a stable residential address, or lack the necessary documents to open a bank account.
