The governor of New York on Friday opposed President Trump's criticism that the state of New York had asked for too much help from the federal government to fight coronavirus.
During the daily press conference, a journalist asked Governor Andrew Cuomo what his response was to the comments the president posted on Twitter as the press conference continued.
In one of the comments, the president said that the governor should spend more time "with deeds" and less time "with complaints".
"We built hospital capacity for your state for thousands of beds that you didn't need or use," the president wrote. Mr Trump further said that New York had received the largest number of fans and that he thought the country should have its own reserves.
In another comment, President Trump wrote: "We have given New York more funding, aid and equipment than any other state" complaining that the governor "had never said 'thank you'."
New York is the country hardest hit by the epidemic in the United States. On Friday, more than 223,000 cases and more than 17,000 deaths were confirmed in New York. The death toll is expected to rise, as there are a number of residents who have died in the flats and it is thought that they may have been COVID-19 patients.
"First of all, if he's at home watching the conference on TV, he's probably doing well to get up and go to work," Mr. Cuomo countered.
The governor added that he had thanked the president several times for federal assistance, including the 2,500-bed field hospital at a conference center and the dispatch of the Comfort naval hospital ship to the port city of New York, where more than half of those with COVID-19 in this state.
"I don't know what to do, take a bouquet of flowers?" said the governor.
Governor Cuomo stressed that New York had based its claims on hospital capacity and medical equipment on the federal government's forecasts, in particular the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the White House Working Group against coronavirus.
In March, the two structures projected between 160 million and 214 million people infected with coronavirus if physical distancing measures were not implemented.
"Our demands stemmed from the predictions he made," Governor Cuomo said of the president. "He has to go back and read the reports he made."
The governor of New York said that if the president is not satisfied with the predictions he has made, let him dismiss the head of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the working group against coronavirus, as well as his adviser, Peter Navarro.
A few days ago, Mr. Cuomo said he had no desire to quarrel with the president when Mr. Trump said he enjoyed the authority to decide when to lift restrictive measures on the economy.
"I will not oppose the president," Mr Cuomo said. But on Friday it appeared the New York governor had changed his mind, jumping into criticism that lasted for almost 30 minutes.
The president changed his tone by adhering to constitutional competencies and said the decision to reopen the economy should be made by governors. Mr Cuomo said that if he did not provide funding and did not support large-scale tests to diagnose the infection, the president "was not doing anything".
"The only thing he's doing is getting on top of the parade," Mr Cuomo said.
The president also commented via Twitter that states should increase testing rates.
Governor Cuomo has said several times that states do not have the capacity to conduct mass analyzes. The state of New York alone has a population of 19.5 million.
"He says he will not provide funding to states and will not help them conduct the analysis. I can tell you that states have no choice but to do so. And if testing doesn't work, we will have serious problems, "said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. VOA
