The "softening" of the measures begins / Austria and Spain open shops and businesses

As announced, Austria has begun easing isolation measures taken to protect against coronavirus. Thousands of shops less than 400 square feet [400 sq m] were reopened, along with heavy equipment stores and horticultural centers.

However, physical distancing remains in place as people are instructed to stay home as long as possible. Austria was among the first European countries to impose a blockade about a month ago. Wearing masks at the supermarket and pharmacy there is mandatory. The country has so far reported 14,000 infected and 368 dead.

One week ago, the Austrian executive announced that the new infection curve had been leveled. Spain has also allowed the opening of several businesses and Denmark has started reopening schools for younger children. Poland has announced it will gradually begin easing measures, possibly starting stores.

As of today, Italy, the country hit hardest by pandemics in Europe with over 20,000 victims, will allow some firms to resume operations. French President Emmanuel Macron, however, decided to keep the blockade for another four weeks, until May 11. The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that easing the isolation measures too soon could lead to "a deadly outbreak."
