While various countries around the world have chosen isolation as a way to curb the spread of coronavirus, some hope that antibody tests may be a solution.
Also known as serology tests, they are not intended to diagnose active coronavirus infection, but through blood samples to control proteins in the immune system, known as antibodies. Their presence means that a person has been exposed to the virus, passed it on and developed antibodies against it, which could mean that he has developed some kind of immunity. These tests can diagnose infections through a sample that is then tested for a viral genetic material.
In the United States, as explained by the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, work is underway to make a significant number of antibody tests available. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved any antibody test for coronavirus, but for a test done by Cellex Inc. authorization for urgent use has been granted. The presence of antibodies can help identify those who have been infected but have never realized they had the disease. Although it is not known for sure how long the immunity developed against Covid 19 may last, some experts who refer to previous cases of coronavirus Mers say it can go from 10 months to a year.
