The 'historic' call to prayer during Ramadan echoes in a US city

A call to prayer in Minneapolis Cedar-Riverside is believed to be the first publicly broadcast prayer call in a major American city.

According to foreign media, the Telegraph reports, from loudspeakers on the roof of a Minnesota mosque, the Islamic call for prayer echoed for the first time ever in a Minneapolis neighborhood on Thursday, as the Muslim community there prepared to begin the holy month of Ramadan.

And the adhan, as stated further, echoed again in the morning on Friday and will continue five times a day during the holy month.

What the American media calls "Simple, short call - known as the call to prayer" marked a historic moment for Minneapolis and major cities across the United States, community members said.

While the call to prayer is usually transmitted throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and other countries, for many Muslims in the United States, it is heard only inside mosques or community centers.

"There is definitely a lot of excitement," said Imam Abdisalam Adam, who is on board the Dar al-Hijrah mosque, from where the call to prayer will be broadcast.

Called by various representatives from mosques around the city, the call for prayer is expected to reach thousands of people in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood in Minneapolis, according to Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
